Registered Nurse – Med Surg Telemetry

Location

  • Farmington, New Mexico
  • Surgical Inpatient Unit (3rd floor)
  • Level 3 Trauma Center (often cares for Level 1 and 2 trauma cases)
  • Adult patient population (ages 18-100+)
  • 24 beds, patient ratio up to 1:6 with admissions and discharges throughout the shift
  • Electronic Health Record system: Cerner

Employment Details

  • Travel assignment
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Nights
  • Weekly guaranteed hours: 36
  • Weekend requirement: At least 3 shifts per 4-week schedule
  • No call requirements
  • Float to Medical, Nephrology, Inpatient Rehab, Cardiology (lower acuity), Med/Surg, and Pediatrics (adult patients only)

Unit and Patient Care

  • Specialty areas: Orthopedic, Neurosurgery, Medical, Nephrology
  • Common patient care includes post-operative ortho/neurosurgical/abdominal surgeries
  • Care for patients with NG tubes, chest tubes, Foley catheters, TURPs, respiratory issues, diabetes, sepsis, alcohol withdrawal, rib fractures, altered mental status, and pain management
  • Equipment used: IV pumps, vital signs monitors

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New Mexico
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing
  • BLS certification
  • Experience with post-operative patient care in orthopedic, neurosurgical, and abdominal surgeries
  • Experience caring for patients with NG tubes and rib fractures

Additional Information

  • Must follow all facility policies and guidelines as regular staff do
  • Position includes charge nurse responsibilities
  • Submittal requirements include resume, competency exam, skills checklist, and screening questions

Pros

Unit is comprised of many travelers. Core staff and travelers have all been fantastic! The unit is set up quite well to manage the surges of patients. It is the only main hospital around so it can definitely provide good experience. Most of the providers I've encountered over the last couple months actually listen to the nurses and are easy to work with.

Cons

It is definitely busy before the size of the town. I can't say I have any other cons.
