Registered Nurse – Neurology (Travel)

Location: Newburgh, Indiana
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Specialty: Neurology (Neuro Surgical Medical-Surgical)
• Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
• Schedule: No blocked schedule requests allowed
• Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks; every other holiday
• Float Requirement:

  • First to float within skillset
  • Possible float to nearby campuses (8 to 11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
  • Mid-shift float within same campus; cross-campus mid-shift float unlikely but possible
• On Call/Call Back: Not required
• Unit Info:

  • 37 beds
  • Day shift nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-6
  • Night shift nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5-7
  • Clinical nurse takes partial patient assignment
• Unit Culture: Strong leadership, well-developed nursing team, welcoming to travelers
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs only; no competing health system or agency logos
• Additional Notes:

  • Teaching hospital; may require precepting students and new hires
  • Three call-ins can result in termination
  • COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)

Patient Population

• Neuro and Neuro-Surgical patients including:

  • CVAs (strokes)
  • Elective back/neck surgeries
  • Post-operative craniotomies
  • Cerebral angiograms
  • General medical and psychiatric patients

Required Qualifications

• Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years strong neurology experience
  • At least 1 prior travel assignment required
  • Trauma Level II experience required
• Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current active compact Registered Nurse license
  • AHA BLS certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Charting: Recent EPIC experience required (checkoff class will be required)

Skills & Competencies

• Strong neurological assessments including NIHSS and dysphagia screening
• Basic telemetry interpretation
• Strict intake and output monitoring
• Foley catheter and straight catheter care
• Initiate and titrate heparin drips
• Blood and blood product administration, venipuncture, and blood cultures
• Management of NG tubes and indwelling drains
• Administration of stable drips (e.g., Protonix, Lasix)
• Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required

Orientation

• Weekly orientation sessions in July, then bi-weekly thereafter
• GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week
