Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Overview

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
  • Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5; may occasionally flex to 1:6
  • Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule (Friday/Saturday/Sunday combination)
  • Floating: Regular floating within scope to other departments, units, or facilities as needed
  • Charge RN and holiday shifts may be assigned as needed
  • Local candidates not accepted; home must be at least 50 miles from facility

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • Cardiac telemetry and ER holding experience
  • Management of dysrhythmias and use of rapid response teams
  • Feeding tube care
  • Renal failure care
  • Stroke (CVA) care
  • Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacement care
  • Surgical drain management
  • Tracheostomy management

Schedule and Work Conditions

  • Night shift, 3x12 hour shifts per week
  • Floating between units and departments as needed
  • No on-call required
  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • No guaranteed hours

Patient Population

  • Medical diagnoses including pulmonary, wounds, urology, general cardiac, neurological, and renal conditions

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, education verification, and international searches if applicable
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start
  • Primary source verification of Missouri RN license via NURSYS required
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include full panel and remain valid throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required annually; must be able to shave facial hair if needed
  • Immunizations and titers required or declination forms for:
    • Tdap (or Td for renewal)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer, vaccination, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept 30 - Apr 1)
  • Required facility-specific documents prior to start:
    • HIPAA Acknowledgement
    • Latex Allergy Questionnaire
    • Confidentiality Form
    • Regulatory Compliance Education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
    • TB Questionnaire (annual)
    • Hand Hygiene Policy acknowledgment
    • Fingernail Policy acknowledgment
    • Dress Code Policy acknowledgment
    • Orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) completed through online platform before start
  • Badge photo required (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
  • Employment application and professional references required (2 professional references preferred within last year)
  • Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be able to meet floating requirements within the facility
  • No pending licenses accepted
  • No local candidates accepted (must live 50+ miles away)
  • First-time travel nurses not accepted for this role
