NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Covington, Louisiana
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45–7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Must have delivery attendance experience (vaginal and C-section).
• Patient ratio typically 1:2-3; may float to Newborn Observation Unit (NOU) with ratios 1:4-6.
• Expected to float to normal newborn nursery as needed.
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
• Holiday requirement: at least 1 major and 1 minor holiday.
• Scheduling is self-managed with specified weekend and holiday obligations.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse license in Louisiana
• Minimum 3 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
• Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Labor and Delivery experience
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
• Experience with Epic electronic medical record system

Unit & Clinical Responsibilities

• Attend deliveries and assist with newborn transition.
• Admit and discharge neonates to/from NICU and NOU.
• Coordinate care with multidisciplinary team (NNP, MD, RN, Social Services, RT, Radiology, OT).
• Educate and update parents; assist new mothers with breastfeeding.
• Perform placement of IVs in neonates and draw labs.
• Manage ventilators and central lines.
• Administer medications via multiple routes (IV, IM, SQ, ETT, OGT, NGT, oral, rectal, topical) and blood products.
• Assist with procedures including chest tube insertion, PICC, UAC, UVC placement, x-rays, CBG/ABG sampling, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, EEGs, intubation, oxygen and nitric oxide administration, and exchange transfusions.

Required Skills & Attributes

• Compassion, empathy, and strong customer service skills.
• Experience as a level III NICU nurse.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID matching all documentation.
• Background check within 6 months covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years.
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
• Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel or expanded panel depending on hire date).
• Employment application with 7 years of work history, no gaps over 30 days.
• Skills checklist updated within 12 months of start.

Health & Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 12 months of start (not required by employer but required by placement agency).
• Tdap vaccine within 10 years (declinations accepted with proper documentation).
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray per current guidelines.
• Annual TB questionnaire.
• Proof of immunity or vaccination for:

  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
• Hepatitis B series, titer, or declination signed within 12 months of start.
• Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1–Mar 31) with exemptions and declinations accepted.

Additional Certifications (if applicable)

• ACLS, PALS, EFM, and other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment but are not specified as mandatory for this role.

Appearance & Conduct

• Must comply with employee appearance policy.
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) certification not required for this specialty/unit.

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with prior travel contract experience who are comfortable with high-acuity neonatal care, delivery attendance, and flexible scheduling including weekends and holidays.
