Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
  • Charting System: EPIC experience required
  • Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
  • Patient Population: Adult neurological patients, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
  • Unit Details:
    • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with a 1:5 ratio)
    • Includes 5 dedicated beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (American Heart Association only)
  • BLS (American Heart Association only)
  • NIH Stroke Scale Certification
  • Current RN license valid in Virginia or a compact state license (pending licenses accepted only if single-state from a non-compact state)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
  • Medication administration, including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
  • Rapid Response and isolation precautions

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Virginia
  • Minimum 1 year of Neuro PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation/management and participation in Rapid Response/Code teams
  • Comfortable working with a 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Experience with EPIC charting system

Experience

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU
  • Required years of experience: Minimum 1 year of Neuro PCU experience within the last year
  • Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility
  • Background check covering 7 years of residence/employment history (not required annually unless there is a 30+ day break between assignments)
  • E-Verify or attestation required
  • Education verification of highest earned degree (transcript or diploma required)
  • Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (acceptable masks: 1860S, 1860, 1870+, 1804S)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • TB questionnaire required for all candidates
  • Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Completed employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
  • Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing
  • Orientation manual review prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)

  • Facility allows one call-off shift per two weeks

  • Must submit all scheduling requests (RTO, block, special) with application
