Description
Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU (Travel/Contract)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Night, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
- Hours per week: 36
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during the 13-week contract
- Charting System: EPIC experience required
- Floating: Required to float to units within clinical skillset
- Patient Population: Adult neurological patients, including neurosurgical recovery, stroke management, neuro-specific diagnoses, and medical overflow
- Unit Details:
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–5 (travelers must be comfortable with a 1:5 ratio)
- Includes 5 dedicated beds for continuous 24-hour epilepsy monitoring
Required Certifications
- ACLS (American Heart Association only)
- BLS (American Heart Association only)
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification
- Current RN license valid in Virginia or a compact state license (pending licenses accepted only if single-state from a non-compact state)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response (dysrhythmia interpretation/management, Rapid Response/Code teams)
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central/peripheral line care
- Medication administration, including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support (nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management)
- Rapid Response and isolation precautions
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of Neuro PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with cardiac monitoring and emergency response, including dysrhythmia interpretation/management and participation in Rapid Response/Code teams
- Comfortable working with a 1:5 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Experience with EPIC charting system

- Specialty: Registered Nurse – Neuro PCU
- Required years of experience: Minimum 1 year of Neuro PCU experience within the last year
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address within 100 miles of the facility
- Background check covering 7 years of residence/employment history (not required annually unless there is a 30+ day break between assignments)
- E-Verify or attestation required
- Education verification of highest earned degree (transcript or diploma required)
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Fit test within 1 year, updated annually (acceptable masks: 1860S, 1860, 1870+, 1804S)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Required immunizations or positive titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
- Varicella
- TB questionnaire required for all candidates
- Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Completed employment application/resume
- Annual skills checklist update required
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing
- Orientation manual review prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)

- Facility allows one call-off shift per two weeks
- Locals accepted within radius rule criteria
- Must submit all scheduling requests (RTO, block, special) with application
- Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center and Magnet-designated for nursing excellence
- Facility provides advanced neurological and stroke care, including 24/7 neurointerventional coverage
