Registered Nurse – Operating Room
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 18 weeks
Job Summary
- Fast-paced Ambulatory Surgery Center specializing in Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and Eye surgeries
- 6 Operating Rooms with an average daily census of 45 patients
- Patient age groups: Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatrics
- Shift: Day shift, 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM)
- No call or weekend requirements
- Float to other nearby ambulatory surgery centers in Charlotte area on a rare basis
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience in an outpatient setting, preferably ambulatory surgery
- Strong ENT surgery experience
- Knowledge and experience with malignant hyperthermia management
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Preferred Qualifications
- Pediatric general surgery experience
- Bronchoscopy and ophthalmology surgical skills (cataract extraction/implant, corneal transplant, eye trauma, glaucoma surgery, vitrectomy)
- Pediatric ophthalmology skills (eye trauma)
- Experience with electrosurgical units and fiber optic light sources/cords
- Knowledge of infection control and laser safety
Orientation & Training
- Unit orientation: 40 hours
- Scrubs provided
- EPIC electronic health record system experience required
- Use of SBAR communication method
Work Environment & Additional Details
- Float requirement to other ambulatory surgery centers in Charlotte area, rarely needed
- No call or weekend shifts required
- RTO (Request Time Off) after booking is not allowed and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation
- Patient diagnoses commonly include ENT surgery, cataracts, ocular plastics, and head and neck conditions
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background check within 6 months required for clinical candidates
- Drug screening within 6 months required (9-panel acceptable)
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive TB with documentation)
- Measles (Rubeola) immunity via titer or vaccination
- Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella per standard healthcare requirements
- Annual flu vaccination or approved exemption with mask requirement
- Physical exam not required for this assignment
- Photo ID (passport or driver’s license) required
- Various facility-specific documents and agreements must be completed prior to start
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests required as per travel agency standards
- Color blindness testing within 1 year required
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 72 hours of start (specific to RN specialties)
Scheduling & Shift Details
- 40 hours per week, 4 days of 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM)
- Scheduling based on unit needs
- No weekend or call requirements
Patient Population
- All ages: infants through geriatrics
- Surgical cases primarily ENT and ophthalmology
Notes
- First-time travel nurses are welcome if they have strong ENT scrub skills
- Floating to other ambulatory surgery centers in the Charlotte area is rare but may be required
- Strict policy on time off after booking; no RTO allowed onsite
