Registered Nurse – CVICU (Travel/Contract)

Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work evening/night shifts with every other weekend and some holidays off; no on-call required.
  • Provide nursing care in a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) setting.
  • Experience with Cardiovascular Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH) machine (NextStage) is required.
  • Experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and/or Acuity Adaptable areas is preferred.
  • Basic Arrhythmia knowledge required; must pass a Telemetry test prior to start.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin.
  • Minimum of 1 year of CVICU experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Basic Arrhythmia experience.

Testing & Competency Requirements

  • Pass the facility’s Telemetry test (Adult Telemetry Test via LMS WorkRamp) with:
    • Minimum 80% overall score.
    • 100% in lethal rhythms subcategory.
    • Correct answers on all 3rd degree heart block questions.
  • Candidates have up to 3 attempts to pass; remediation required after 2 failed attempts. Failure after 3 attempts results in contract cancellation.
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days prior to start, including all locations lived/worked/schooled in the past 7 years.
  • Wisconsin Caregiver Background Check and BID Form completion required.
  • Monthly monitoring through federal exclusion lists (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG).
  • Education verification as applicable.
  • Employment application and 2 clinical references from the last 3 years required.
  • Annual skills checklist required.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol; TB questionnaire updated annually.
  • Proof of immunity or vaccination for:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) – 2 doses or positive titers; medical/religious exemptions considered.
    • Varicella – 2 doses or positive titer; medical/religious exemptions considered.
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series with positive titer or signed declination form.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required annually during flu season).
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination proof as applicable.
  • Meningococcal vaccine or declination if working in Microbiology (not typically for RN CVICU).
  • Drug screening per agency standards prior to start.

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Passport-style photo for badge issuance (no selfies, headwear only for religious/medical reasons).
  • Completion of communicable disease form within 90 days of start.
  • Signed acknowledgment of orientation safety manual and pass/fail testing policies.
  • Completion of any required facility-specific education or remediation courses if applicable.

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
  • No call responsibilities.
  • Contract is for 13 weeks (approximately 3 months).
  • 48 hours per week expected.

This position is ideal for experienced CVICU RNs with strong telemetry and arrhythmia skills, comfortable working night shifts in a high-acuity cardiovascular critical care environment.
