NICU Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide specialized nursing care in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for neonates, including those with neonatal abstinence syndrome and premature infants (29–34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation).


Required Qualifications

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid RN license in New Jersey
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • IV Certification

Education

  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care experience, including within the last year
  • Experience with neurologic care for neonatal abstinence syndrome
  • Skilled in care of neonates 29–34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation
  • Experience with neonatal dosage calculations
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Cardiovascular monitoring with telemetry experience
  • Care for ventilated/intubated patients
  • Respiratory support with High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) experience
  • Experience managing respiratory distress
  • Experience with enteral feedings and tube placement
  • Management of hyperbilirubinemia
  • Developmental care experience
  • Experience with sepsis workup
  • Experience with EPIC charting system

Staffing & Unit Details

  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:1 to 1:3; 1:4 in Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)
  • No assignment to high-risk deliveries, Level IV patients, ECMO, or fresh post-operative patients
  • Scrubs color: Navy Blue

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background & Screening

  • Criminal background check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches
  • Drug screen (10-panel urine) within 30 days of start
  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history
  • Work history verification for at least 1 year prior to start (NJ state requirement)
  • Two professional references within last 2 years (one managerial)

Health & Immunizations

  • Physical exam within 12 months confirming clearance to perform job functions and free of communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol (within 3 months of start)
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
  • Annual influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption
  • Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing for respirators (mandatory before start)
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if job tasks require glove use or respirator use
  • Color vision testing if job tasks require color discrimination

Competency & Testing

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 72 hours of signing contract
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for telemetry and critical care units)
  • IV Therapy/Infusion exam (required for all RNs except OR specialties)
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication knowledge with remediation policy
  • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment

Scheduling & Policies

  • Call-off policy allows 1 shift off per 2 weeks
  • Priority given to schedule requests submitted with proof before offer
  • Floating assignments based on patient volume and acuity, must remain within skillset
  • Locals accepted at same rate as travelers
