Registered Nurse – Stepdown Neuro (Travel/Contract)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Unit & Patient Population
- Mixed Acuity: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Stepdown care levels
- 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
- Patient conditions include strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological disorders
- Eight beds equipped for long-term EEG monitoring
- Multi-care level unit; nurses may care for up to six Med Surg patients simultaneously
Staffing Ratios
- Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 (rare)
- Stepdown: 1:3-4 (day and night)
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a large, urban hospital setting
- EPIC electronic charting experience required
- First-time travel nurses not accepted unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center
- Must be prepared to float frequently within scope to meet staffing needs, including potential float to other campuses/units
- Must be more than 100 miles from the facility (no local candidates accepted)
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
Licensure & Certifications
- Active RN license for Nebraska (pending license accepted if in hand before start; otherwise, booking delayed 6 weeks)
- ACLS, BLS, and other certifications as applicable per unit requirements (AHA standards)
- Required certifications and verifications must be completed prior to start, including primary source license verification and NURSYS verification
Clinical Requirements & Skills
- Drip medication administration required on all floors
- Ability to care for a specialized neurological patient population
- Must be able to work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract
- Weekend shifts required: 4 weekend shifts out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat)
Facility & Work Environment
- 100% nicotine-free facility
- Care teams include CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs
- Mandatory scrubs: Steele gray scrubs with facility logo (provided after confirmation)
- Parking available via permit (~$55/month) or daily rate (~$3 for 20 hours)
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks
- Ongoing SAM and OIG checks every 30 days
- Education verification and high school diploma required
- State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
- Drug screening within 60 days of start and updated annually
- Physical exam and fit mask test (3M 1860 Small/Regular or 3M 1870+) within 1 year, updated annually
- Immunizations and health documents required:
- Tdap within last 10 years
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
- 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if needed)
- Hepatitis B titer or declination
- 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if needed)
- Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required)
- COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions accepted
- Annual skills checklist required
- 2 professional references from work within past 2 years
Additional Notes
- RTO (Request Time Off) blackout dates: June 11–22, 2026 (due to College World Series)
- Up to 2 weeks of RTO permitted; requests must be submitted with application and approved by manager
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required
- Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
