Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical - MS Neuro RN)

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (MS Neuro RN)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, Nights (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: 4-5 weekend shifts per 4-week period plus holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities
  • Unit Description:
    • 23-bed inpatient General Neurology/Medical Stroke/Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
    • Adult and geriatric patients
    • Private patient rooms, including a reverse airflow room
    • Continuous epilepsy monitoring in nine rooms
    • Patient diagnoses include Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, seizures, strokes
    • Supports Comprehensive Spine Center and Comprehensive Epilepsy Center programs
    • Also cares for overflow neurosurgical and spine surgery patients

Experience

  • Years of Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required

Licensure & Certifications

  • License: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC only
  • Preferred Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only
    • NIH Stroke Certification (as required)

Additional Certifications (as applicable)

  • PALS, TNCC, CHEMO, NRP, EFM, Tech Cert Verification, IV Certification (for select LPNs), and others depending on unit and role

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
  • Includes SSN Trace, Statewide, National Criminal, Sex Offender Registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
  • Education verification required (diploma/transcripts accepted as placeholder)

Health & Safety

  • Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or proof of prior positive with chest x-ray
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella titers or vaccination/booster documentation
    • Hepatitis B titer, vaccine series, or declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption (flu season August 1 - April 30)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)

Facility Specific

  • Completion of orientation modules prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
  • Upload COVID vaccination records if available; if declined, must complete MUSC Vaccination Declination form
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
  • Color blindness testing prior to start
  • Proof of 2 clinical references
  • Employment application including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps

Additional Notes

  • During hurricane season (June-November, peak August-September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during this period.
  • Radiation badge required only for specific roles (not applicable for this RN position unless otherwise specified).
  • Floating between units is expected to meet facility needs.

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of experience in medical surgical or neuro nursing, comfortable working night shifts with weekend and holiday rotations, and willing to float within similar units. Compliance with extensive background, health, and certification requirements is mandatory.
