Job Opportunity: Neuro ICU Registered Nurse

Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work in a Neuro Intensive Care Unit specializing in comprehensive stroke care.
  • Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subdural hematomas, craniotomies, carotid stents/endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, myasthenia gravis, and post-neurosurgery management.
  • Care involves management of ventilated patients, dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care, continuous IV sedation, ICP monitoring, external ventricular drains (EVD), lumbar drains, and isolation precautions.
  • Unit uses specialized equipment such as EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun.
  • Unit systems include Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR.

Work Schedule

  • Night shift: 18:45 – 07:15 (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, totaling 36 hours/week).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Float requirement: Yes.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratio: Typically 2:1, may flex to 3:1 during high census.
  • Average daily census: 11-12 patients.
  • Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights).
  • Scrubs: Navy blue & white.
  • No call requirement.
  • Maximum allowed RTO (request time off) after booking: 7 days.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina.
  • Minimum of 2 years Neuro ICU experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year required.
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience in ventilator (vent) management and care of ventilated patients.
  • Skilled in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
  • Proficient in central line care and management.
  • Experience with continuous IV sedation.
  • Experience with external ventricular drains (EVD) and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring.
  • Post-neurosurgery management experience.
  • Experience with lumbar drains.
  • Experience with arterial line management.

Compliance and Screening Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal databases, sex offender search, and education verification for highest degree earned.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days and annual updates required.
  • Fit mask testing required (N95 or PAPR training accepted except at certain facilities).
  • Immunizations and titers required or boosters as applicable for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1–10/31).
  • TB testing: PPD, Qgold, or Tspot within 1 year; if positive, chest x-ray within 5 years and annual physician-signed TB questionnaire required.

Documentation and Orientation

  • Must complete facility-specific orientation modules including:
    • Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (8-10 hours for acute care)
    • Medication Safety training with certificate of completion
    • Annual compliance training (40 minutes)
    • Confidentiality agreement
    • Hospital policies acknowledgment
    • Dress code acknowledgment (navy blue & white scrubs)
  • Must provide a passport-style photo on a white background for badge creation.
  • Must complete Corp ID process including logging into I-Learn within 24 hours of receiving credentials.
  • References: 2 professional references within 3 years required.
  • Employment application must be uploaded to the facility system.

Additional Notes

  • This unit is a comprehensive stroke center with a strong focus on neurocritical care.
  • Candidates without strong neuro ICU experience or less than 2 years in neuro ICU will not be considered.
  • RTO (request time off) after booking is strictly limited and cannot be worked out onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation.
  • Candidates must be comfortable with flexible patient ratios and weekend shifts.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro ICU RNs with prior travel experience seeking a challenging and specialized critical care assignment in North Carolina.
