NICU RN Travel Job - Phoenix, Arizona

Job Details

  • Specialty: NICU RN (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
  • Location: Phoenix, Arizona
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks (minimum contract length)
  • Unit: NICU - Level 4
  • Unit Size: 71 beds (17 stepdown beds)
  • Hospital Type: Teaching hospital, Level 1 Trauma center
  • EMR System: Cerner
  • Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm (day and night shifts)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: 3 out of 6 major holidays
  • Nurse to Patient Ratios: 1:2 in ICU, 1:3 in Level 2
  • Charge Nurse Role: Yes, charge nurse with no patient assignment; also serves as a high-risk RN resource
  • Nurse Aides: 1 Patient Care Technician (PCT) per shift
  • Orientation: 2-3 days floor-specific orientation
  • Floating: Mother-baby and labor care (babies only)
  • Common Patient Diagnoses: Premature infants, cardiac defects, genetic disorders, surgical cases, ECMO, and therapeutic cooling
  • Room Setup: 4 private rooms
  • Respiratory Therapy: RT manages ventilators, available 24/7
  • Pharmacy: NICU pharmacy available during the day
  • In-House Coverage: Neonatologist and midlevels available 24/7
  • Telemonitoring: Phillips system used
  • Scrub Color: Navy

Required Certifications and Experience

  • Specialty Experience: Minimum 3 years NICU experience required (Level 4 experience preferred; will screen busy Level 3)
  • Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • Teaching Experience: Required (teaching hospital with nursing students)
  • Certifications: BLS, NRP, Cardiac STABLE plus
  • EMR Experience: Cerner required
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam: Required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance; maximum 2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification within the region
  • SIMs Lab: Pass/fail skills lab on Day 1 for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions for NICU and ED); sterile field competency required
  • Additional Skills: Competency in lifts, restraints, and wound care expected (educational only)

Additional Requirements and Notes

  • Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not strictly required for NICU; prior travel required for ED and Neuro ICU roles
  • Orientation: Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
  • Restrictions:
    • Cannot work two contracts simultaneously within this system
    • Must have been off permanent staff for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
    • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Vehicle: Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • Parking: Assigned parking with shuttle to facility; night shift parking in garage
  • Work Environment: Teaching hospital with nursing students present
  • Pass/Fail Exams: Day 1 pass/fail exam required; failure can result in termination
  • Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every 3rd weekend and 3 out of 6 major holidays required

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with strong critical care skills, teaching experience, and the ability to pass required competency exams. The role offers exposure to a high-acuity Level 4 NICU with a variety of complex neonatal cases in a teaching hospital environment.
