Job Summary
The Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Specialist is responsible for reviewing inpatient and/or outpatient medical records to ensure accurate representation of the severity of illness and proper coding. This role validates that coding reflects medical necessity and supports accurate reporting of patient illness severity, risk of mortality, and complexity of care. The specialist identifies documentation gaps, collaborates with physicians and healthcare teams to improve clinical documentation quality, and ensures compliance with coding, billing, and regulatory standards. This position requires advanced knowledge of disease processes, medications, and critical thinking skills.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Minnesota
- Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist with 2 years of experience
- Experience as an Inpatient Clinical Documentation Integrity (ICDI) Specialist / Inpatient CDI Specialist, including concurrent review of medical records
- Production role experience within the past 12 months in an ICDI/CDI Specialist role
- Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) or Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) certification
- One of the following licenses or certifications:
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P)
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience in an inpatient setting
