Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality care to ICU patients using evidence-based nursing practices and critical thinking. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans, prioritize patient needs, and educate patients and families.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, and organizational standards.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care principles (e.g., Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding).
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Implement process improvements and participate in peer/institutional reviews.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in compliance with standards.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Project a professional image demonstrating caring and respect.
  • Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Promote lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.

Requirements

  • Current New York State RN License
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience, including 2 years critical care/telemetry experience
  • EPIC experience highly preferred
  • Travel experience required for travel positions (1 year), not required for Per Diem
  • Ability to manage an average unit census of 8 patients with a 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio

Schedule & Staffing

  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each
  • Every other weekend required
  • Variable shifts

Contract Length

  • Approximately 13 weeks (89 days ≈ 13 weeks)
