Registered Nurse - Cardiovascular Surgery

Location: Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

Unit: Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR), 2nd Floor, Main Building
Number of OR Suites: 3
Staff: 11 total
Day Shift: 1 charge nurse, 3-4 RNs, 2 Scrub Techs, 1 Aide or Anesthesia Tech
Night Shift: 3-member call team
Patient Ratios: 3 staff members per OR
Equipment: Open Heart, Vascular, Thoracic
EMR System: Meditech

Required Qualifications

Valid RN license in New Hampshire
Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) experience, including experience within the last year
Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications: ACLS, BLS
Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic Operating Room experience

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to scrub cardiac and vascular cases
Experience with Meditech EMR

Valve surgeries
TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
EVAR (Endovascular Aneurysm Repair)
TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aneurysm Repair)
Carotid endarterectomy
Fistula creation/interventions
VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
Thoracotomy
Femoral-popliteal bypass
Angiograms with interventions
LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device)
RVAD (Right Ventricular Assist Device)
ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
Level 2 trauma coverage for vascular and thoracic procedures

Work Schedule & Call Requirements

Approximately 36 hours per week
Call requirement: about one weekend per month and 2-3 additional days per week
Night call team consists of 3 people: 2 RNs and 1 scrub tech

Work Environment & Culture

Small, close-knit team with many members having long tenure (up to 20 years)
Self-motivated, team-oriented, and flexible personality fit preferred
Scrubs provided (dress code)

Additional Notes

Time off requests must be submitted during the contract period
Location is on the seacoast of New Hampshire, about one hour north of Boston and 1.5 hours south of the White Mountains

Pros

One of the best group of girls I've ever worked with, both nurses and doctors. The doctors actually treat you like a coworker and not just someone who is way beneath them. I didn't love the hospital itself but the staff made every shift worth it.

Cons

Cost of living was wayyyy too high and the pay was way too low to be able to stay there for more than one contract. I would've kept extending if I could've afforded it. They also use meditech which is TRASH.
