Registered Nurse – PCU / Telemetry

Job Summary

Seeking a licensed RN with experience in PCU/Telemetry for a 13-week travel assignment with possible extension. The role requires floating to PCU and working primarily on MedSurg/Telemetry and PCU units.

Unit Details

Small community hospital with approximately 100 beds (usual occupancy ~88 beds)
PCU unit functions as ICU overflow due to COVID, with about 25-28 beds
MedSurg/Telemetry and PCU units combined for this assignment
Telemetry monitored remotely in ICU; Tele boxes display patient rhythms
No requirement for nurses to read/interpret telemetry strips
Occasional use of CPAP, BiPAP, or High Flow O2; no ventilators on unit
Drips (Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone) rarely assigned; titration per protocol only if experienced

Work Environment & Support

EMR system: CPSI - Evident Thrive (user-friendly)
IV pumps: Baxter Sigma
Cardiac monitors: Neon Kohden
Medication dispensing: Omnicell (pharmacy not 24/7)
No dedicated IV team, but staff PICC & Midline certified for assistance
Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 for EKGs, breathing treatments, ABGs
ER physician on-site 24/7 for emergencies; physician groups cover patients after hours
Charge nurse coverage varies by shift; senior nurse on nights
PCTs (Patient Care Technicians) typically staffed at about 4 per 24 patients

Orientation & Scheduling

Orientation: 1 day plus pre-orientation packet
Floor-specific orientation includes computer setup, charting, admissions, discharges, medication scanning
Shifts: Primarily 8-hour shifts; biggest need on evening shift (3pm-11pm)
12-hour shifts possible (11am-11pm or 7pm-7am) with some admission nurse duties during early hours
Weekend requirement: every other weekend, with flexibility for more
Holidays: Travelers integrated into permanent staff holiday rotation
Floating: All travelers must float to PCU; assignments based on skill level and experience

Staffing Ratios

MedSurg: Typically 1:6, rarely 1:7
PCU (stepdown): 1:4 when normal operations resume

Required Certifications & Experience

Florida RN license required (must have license in hand)
BLS certification required
ACLS certification preferred
Minimum 1 year of specialty experience in PCU/Telemetry
Some prior travel experience required (approximately 15-18 months total experience preferred)

Additional Notes

Nurses do not need to titrate drips unless experienced
Scrub color preference: Navy preferred; black or gray acceptable
Parking available free near ER entrance
