Registered Nurse (CVICU)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit & Patient Population

  • Department: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
  • Unit Size: 18 beds
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:1
  • Patient Types: Open heart surgery, complex thoracic and vascular patients
  • Support Devices: Impella, IABP, CRRT, ECMO
  • Common Procedures: Cardiac surgeries, lytic cases, carotids, TCARS, Fempop, EVARs/Endo AAAs
  • Additional Cases: Complex cases from cath lab, structural heart program, EP lab, ER, and clinic

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with CVICU patient population
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book)
  • Ability to titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support)
  • Valid driver’s license required at time of application

Work Environment & Expectations

  • No CNAs or patient care techs on unit; RNs provide all direct patient care
  • Hospitalists and intensivists present in-house 24/7
  • RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment (vents, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow)
  • Floating required to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs
  • Orientation: 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation
  • Weekend and holiday work required every other week or as needed
  • No call or standby requirements

Additional Requirements & Policies

  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific health system
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
  • Return to orientation (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed

This position offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for experienced CVICU nurses comfortable with complex cardiac patients and advanced life support technologies.
