Registered Nurse (Surgical Acute)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Trauma, Ortho, Surgical (30 beds)
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours/week
Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts per 4 weeks (4 total weekend shifts per 4 weeks)
Holidays: Work included based on unit coverage and permanent staff rotation
Patient Types: Post-op transplant (day 1), Whipples, spine, orthopedic joints, trauma cases
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
Charge Nurse: Does not take patients
Nurse Aides: 2 on days, 1 on nights
Floating: Observation, VMU, T6, T5, 6N, 5N MedSurg, all MedSurg and Telemetry units
EMR System: Cerner
Telemetry Equipment: Phillips
Ventilators: BiPAP, CPAP
IV Team: SWAT RN available
Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
Pharmacy: Available 24/7
Scrub Color: Navy
Contract Details
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
- Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
- Must complete onboarding by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date (no pending items allowed)
- No concurrent contracts allowed while working this assignment
- Must have been off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- Travel teams must have their own vehicles
- Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse license valid in Arizona
- Minimum 2 years of core specialty experience in Surgical Acute or related specialty
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Teaching hospital experience required (nursing students present)
- Cerner EMR experience required
- BLS (AHA) and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years telemetry experience
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts; failure results in 6-month disqualification in region)
- Pass/fail Day 1 SIMs Lab for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (exceptions for some units)
- Must pass Day 1 orientation pass/fail exam
- Natural hair color only; no facial piercings allowed
- Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing

- Facility is a large tertiary care center with transplant specialties (lung, liver, kidney) and Level 1 Trauma designation
- High volume of transplant and complex surgical patients (e.g., Whipple procedures)
- Candidates must include unit size, hospital size, trauma level, and Cerner EMR experience in their profiles
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel distance verification
- Candidates not competent in sterile field maintenance or required nursing skills are not a good fit
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam applies to multiple critical care and procedural units
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed for professional appearance compliance
Prior Travel Experience
- Previous travel experience required for Emergency Department and Neuro ICU specialties (not explicitly required for this Surgical Acute role)
