Registered Nurse – Med Surg (4th Floor)

Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts (06:45–19:15), 36 hours per week


Unit and Patient Care Details

  • Med Surg unit with 52 private rooms
  • Patient ratio: 1:6-7 (mostly 1:7 for day and night shifts)
  • Common patient diagnoses include ortho post-ops, basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), general post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies), infections, COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, cellulitis, and others
  • Hemodialysis provided on unit; experience with peritoneal dialysis highly preferred
  • Patients being tested for COVID may remain on this unit or be floated to the COVID unit as needed
  • Floating to other Med Surg or Med Surg/Oncology units; possible float to IMC for Med Surg overflow (no drips)

Staffing and Support

  • Charge Nurse carries a full patient assignment, supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA) working 40 hours/week (half on floor, half in office)
  • 4-6 CNAs per shift, with CNA-to-patient ratio approximately 1:10-12
  • IV team and PICC team start all IVs; RNs assess IV sites but do not start IVs on this unit
  • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
  • Hospitalist and Intensivist coverage 24/7
  • Pharmacy available 24/7 with Pyxis system

Clinical Skills and Equipment

  • Drips occasionally include Heparin, PCA with morphine sulfate, rare Lasix, and possibly Ativan gtt; no cardiac or insulin drips
  • Ventilation support includes intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and High Flow oxygen
  • RNs are not required to read telemetry strips but may do so if experienced
  • Remote telemetry monitoring as needed (on a different unit)

Orientation and Scheduling

  • General hospital orientation followed by 2 full shifts on the unit
  • Schedules made in 6-week blocks; staff may request up to 6 days off per schedule
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend (3 weekends in a 6-week schedule)
  • Holiday rotation included

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license for West Virginia
  • BLS (AHA) certification required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • ACLS certification is a plus
  • Must have a valid, unexpired driver’s license within a 50-mile radius
  • Willingness to float to the COVID unit

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: Navy blue for RNs (top, bottom, jackets; no hoodies)
  • CNA scrubs: Grey
  • Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission

This position is ideal for Med Surg RNs with solid post-op and medical-surgical experience, comfortable with floating and working in a dynamic hospital environment.
