Position Details

  • Job Title: Cath Lab Registered Nurse
  • Location: Roanoke, Virginia
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift: Day shift, 4x10-hour shifts (7:30 AM - 6:00 PM)
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Call Requirement:
    • 7 on-call shifts and 5 late shifts every 6 weeks
    • One full weekend of call (Friday through Sunday) scheduled together
    • One Saturday shift for elective cases per 6-week period
    • Must be able to return to hospital within 30 minutes when called
  • Holiday Requirement: Must be available to work or take call for one holiday per 13-week contract (rotational)
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, if residing 50-99.9 miles from facility, approved for one 13-week contract
  • First-Time Travelers: Not accepted

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Licensure: Active Registered Nurse license (Virginia license or emergency authorization accepted)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)
    • BLS (American Heart Association)

Required Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Skilled in cardiac catheterization lab procedures including:
    • Left and right heart catheterization (LHC, RHC)
    • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), PTCA, stent placement
    • Atherectomy, temporary pacemaker, Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
    • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), Watchman device, Mitraclip
  • Proficient in sterile technique, EKG lead placement, dysrhythmia recognition and interpretation
  • Experienced in hemodynamic monitoring and rapid response protocols
  • Familiar with diagnostic and interventional cath lab settings using fluoroscopy
  • Knowledge of isolation precautions, equipment handling, and supply management

Unit & Patient Population

  • Adult patients served
  • 6 procedure rooms with daily census of 15–20 patients
  • Common diagnoses: coronary artery disease, valve disorders, heart failure, atrial septal defect/patent foramen ovale closures
  • Advanced procedures include TAVR, left atrial appendage closures, Cardiomems, thrombectomy, mitral clips, renal denervation, and research protocols
  • Equipment used: IABP, Impella, Penumbra, Rotapro, CSI, Shockwave, laser, OCT, IVUS

Scheduling & Documentation

  • Charting system: Epic required
  • Requests for time off must be submitted with application
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • Must provide a valid Driver’s License or State ID within 48 hours of signing, with address within 100 miles of facility

Background & Health Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 1 year of start, covering all locations lived/worked
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for contract renewals
  • Education verification of highest earned degree required
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
  • Required immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • TB questionnaire required for all candidates

Additional Requirements

  • Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Annual skills checklist update required
  • Photo for badge must be professional, with plain background (no selfies or filters)
  • Must complete facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements within 48 hours of signing
  • Orientation manual review required prior to start (not required for inpatient RNs)

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
