Job Opportunity: Pharmacist Outpatient (Travel/Contract)

Location

  • Visalia, California

Employment Details

  • Travel/Contract position
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Work schedule: 4 shifts per week, 10 hours per shift
  • Shift options: Day (7:00 AM – 5:00 PM) or Night (7:00 PM – 5:00 AM)
  • Total hours per week: 40

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Pharmacist license in California
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Minimum 3 years of pharmacist experience
  • Pharmacist experience within the last year
  • Experience in an outpatient setting

Job Responsibilities

General Pharmacist Duties

  • Review, profile/validate, and dispense medications, supplies, and equipment orders accurately and efficiently
  • Follow federal and state laws and hospital policies regarding medication use
  • Consult with healthcare providers to optimize therapy and ensure medication safety
  • Respond to inquiries from physicians and staff regarding medication administration
  • Provide training and guidance to pharmacy technicians, new pharmacists, interns, and residents
  • Participate in medication reconciliation, patient education, and care coordination during transitions of care
  • Monitor and assess patients’ medication and nutritional therapies with timely documentation
  • Offer cost-effective and safe medication alternatives
  • Participate in interprofessional patient care rounds where applicable
  • Set and review annual goals with management

Inpatient-Specific Responsibilities (if assigned)

  • Compound medications and ensure quality standards
  • Respond to emergency alerts (e.g., Code Blue, Code Sepsis)
  • Manage narcotic requisitions and maintain required records
  • Conduct nursing station inspections for medication safety and compliance
  • Monitor pharmacokinetics drugs and consult physicians on optimal drug therapy
  • Price patient charges under manager direction

Outpatient-Specific Responsibilities

  • Review prescriptions for appropriateness and dispense medications
  • Provide patient-specific dosing and monitoring information
  • Participate in collaborative management of referred patients
  • Provide in-service training to healthcare providers and staff

Specialty Areas (if assigned)

  • Serve as clinical expert integrating advanced knowledge in specialty area (e.g., Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Infectious Disease, Anemia Management, Pain Management, Critical Care, NICU/Pediatrics)
  • Participate in formulary management, medication use evaluations, policy development, and institutional committees related to specialty
  • Document clinical interventions and measure clinical and economic effectiveness regularly

Additional Specialty Roles

  • Formulary Management Pharmacist: Manage closed formulary, review medication requests, address shortages, provide education, and report outcomes
  • Compounding Pharmacist: Oversee compounded preparations, ensure quality and compliance, develop training and quality assurance programs, and lead continuous improvement efforts
  • Ambulatory Care Pharmacist: Provide pharmacotherapy recommendations, direct patient care with prescriptive authority, order labs, provide Medication Therapy Management (MTM), participate in multidisciplinary rounds, and serve as preceptor
  • Family Medicine Pharmacist: Provide pharmacotherapy education, participate in interprofessional rounds, provide consultative and direct care with prescriptive authority, deliver didactic lectures, participate in research, and serve as preceptor

Required Certifications & Training

  • ACLS (AHA only) – must be immediately available throughout assignment (not required for Dialysis or LVNs/LPNs in ER)
  • BLS (AHA only) – must be immediately available throughout assignment (not required for Clinical Lab Scientist)
  • PALS (AHA only) – must be immediately available throughout assignment (not required for LVNs/LPNs in ER)
  • NRP – required for Labor & Delivery and NICU (AHA or AAP only)
  • TNCC – required for ER (not required for LVNs/LPNs in ER)
  • EFM – required for Labor & Delivery (AWHONN or NCC approved vendors)
  • CPI – required for ER and Behavioral Health units; must be immediately available
  • Harassment Prevention Training – must be updated annually
  • Medication and unit-specific competency exams (minimum 80% score)
  • Fall Prevention Competency Exam (minimum 80% score)
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • Other unit-specific certifications as applicable

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 90 days of start (7-year search including SSN trace, aliases, county and nationwide searches, FACIS screening, federal district and national federal searches)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start and updated annually
  • Sex offender search within 90 days of start
  • Primary source verification of license within 30 days of start
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 60 days of start (Marijuana testing not accepted)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start verifying ability to perform job duties and free of communicable diseases
  • Fit mask test within 1 year prior to start (Alpha Pro Tech N95 or 3M 8210)
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella, and seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination required or facility-specific exemption with weekly testing if exempt
  • TB testing: 2 PPDs or QuantiFERON Gold/Tspot within required timeframes; clear chest x-ray if positive; annual TB questionnaire
  • References: 2 professional references verifying recent experience within last 24 months
  • Resume/application with at least 1 year current and relevant experience

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, unexpired US passport, or state ID) with front and back copies
  • Badge photo with plain background, no facial piercings/tattoos, no hats/masks/sunglasses
  • Completion and signing of facility-specific documents including confidentiality agreements, orientation packets, hygiene policies, flu and COVID declinations or exemptions, harassment prevention, implicit bias training, hazardous drug risk acknowledgment, and others prior to start
  • Participation in mandatory annual training and competency exams
  • Compliance with facility policies on medication handling, compounding, and safety protocols
