Registered Nurse - Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Schedule includes working every other weekend and holidays as needed
  • Facility type: Short term acute care hospital, Level II Trauma Center
  • Will float to other MedSurg units as needed
  • Charting system: EPIC (experience required)
  • Scrubs color: Royal blue

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 1 year of oncology experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Must be able to work every other weekend and holidays as needed

Required Certifications & Training

  • Chemotherapy certification (ONS/ONCC)
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification
  • ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, CPI, and other certifications as applicable based on unit assignment (verify unit-specific requirements)
  • Facility-specific mandatory training modules and attestations including but not limited to:
    • Stroke Education
    • CLABSI Prevention
    • Preventing Pressure Injury
    • Patient Transportation with Oxygen
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter Pump Interoperability
    • Patient Bedside Rounding
    • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness
    • AME Blood Administration (annual update required)
    • New Employee Orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act Module
    • ED Handbook (if assigned to ED/ER)
    • eCart Training Module (not required for some specialties)
    • Chaperone Policy Training
    • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026)
    • Language Services Training
    • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
    • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
    • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • 10 Panel Drug Screen within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (3M N95 preferred)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (no annual update required unless positive history)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations/vaccinations:
    • Tdap (highly preferred for Pediatric, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum; declination accepted)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines; boosters required if titers low)
    • Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination within 1 year)
    • Varicella (positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician documented history; boosters if low titer)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred
  • Vaccination booster medical exemption requires facility approval

Background & Documentation

  • 7-year criminal background check within 12 months, including:
    • SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, national criminal, federal extended
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification of highest level required; foreign equivalency evaluation required for internationally educated candidates
  • Transcript or diploma may be required if education verification cannot be completed
  • Employment application with 7-year work history, no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • References per standard requirements
  • Attestation of prior radiation exposure required if applicable to unit assignment

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam required within 12 months, minimum 85% passing score
  • Color Blind Testing required for all candidates starting 8/2/2024, minimum 80% passing score
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for RNs in Telemetry, MedSurg/Tele, ER, ICU, Progressive Care, Stepdown, PACU, IR/Cath Lab, Endoscopy, Labor and Delivery units (not required for NICU, Psych, Pediatric, Ambulatory)
