Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel Assignment

Location: Hermitage, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Employment Type: Travel

Unit & Work Environment

• Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
• Beds: Two units with 34 and 25 beds respectively
• Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Nights: 1:5 to 1:6
• Staffing:

  • 3 techs on larger unit, 2 techs on smaller unit when fully staffed
• Equipment used:

  • Bipaps, high flow oxygen, Vapotherm
  • Alaris pumps, cardiac drips, heparin drips, insulin drips
  • Peritoneal dialysis, wound vacs (in conjunction with wound care)
• Documentation system: Meditech
• Scheduling:

  • 3 twelve-hour shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required
  • Self-scheduling with 4-week schedules
• Floating: May float between PCU units or to med-surg floors
• Patient Experience:

  • Hourly rounding on days, every 2 hours on nights
  • Use of AIDET communication and communication boards

Required Qualifications

• Licensure: Registered Nurse license required
• Certifications: BLS, ACLS (NIH Certification also required)
• Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Progressive Care/PCU)
• Skills:

  • Critical thinking
  • EKG rhythm interpretation
  • Experience with cardiac, insulin, and heparin drips
  • Peripheral IV skills
  • Advanced skills with bipaps, high flow oxygen, multiple oxygen delivery systems
  • Stroke and post-cardiac catheterization care
  • Tube feedings and NG/Dobhoff tube management
• Preferred: Peritoneal dialysis experience

Procedures Performed on Unit

• Peritoneal dialysis
• Thoracentesis
• Paracentesis
• Chest tube insertions
• Dobhoff/NG tube insertions
• Central line dressing changes
• Wound vac troubleshooting

• Dress Code: Black scrubs required
• Culture: Family-like environment with strong teamwork
• Most travelers extend their assignment after the first contract on this unit
• Techs assist with patient care to support nurses
