Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Unit: PCU, Oncology, and MedSurg (27-28 beds)
Patient Population: Adult patients with oncology and trauma diagnoses
Job Details
- Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1 RN to 4 patients
- Med/Surg: 1 RN to 5 patients (days), 1 RN to 5-6 patients (nights)
- Common Diagnoses: Oncology and trauma patients
- Float: Yes, to same level of care units (Med/Surg and PCU)
- Orientation: 2 days
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Self-scheduling: Available
- Nursing Assistant Support: Yes
- Charge Nurse Role: Yes
- Additional Unit Support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
- Scrub Color: Navy Blue
Required Certifications & Competencies
- Certifications:
- ACLS (American Heart Association)
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ONS/ONCC (Oncology Nursing Society/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation) preferred but not required (Chemotherapy certification preferred)
- Competencies:
- Ventilator management
- Hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, Arterial line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000)
- Intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring (training provided)
- EMR System: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Specialty Equipment: Lyko lifts and other lift equipment available
Clinical Skills & Experience
- Required Experience: Minimum 1 year in PCU and/or oncology nursing
- Experience with: Oncology and PCU patient care, including chemotherapy administration (certification preferred)
- Drip Management: RNs titrate insulin occasionally and Cardizem; common drips include chemotherapy, heparin, Cardizem, and protonix
- Charge Nurse Experience: Minimum 1 year required if applying for charge role
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers are welcome
Policies & Additional Information
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any associated facilities within the health system network
- Driver’s License: Required at submission to verify distance compliance
- Nail Policy: Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
- Exams: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass
- Patient Care Philosophy: Emphasis on teamwork, cultural sensitivity, respect for diverse beliefs, and compassionate care from diagnosis through remission or end-of-life support
- Patient Experience Focus: Hourly rounding to enhance patient care quality

This is a 13-week night shift contract for an RN with at least 1 year of PCU and oncology experience. The role involves caring for adult oncology and trauma patients in a mixed PCU/MedSurg unit with a focus on teamwork, patient-centered care, and clinical competency in advanced monitoring and medication administration. Certification in ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS is required, with chemotherapy certification preferred. Orientation includes a skills exam with a high passing standard. The position requires compliance with facility policies including a strict radius rule and nail policy.
