Step Down Nurse
Overview
- Location: New Haven, Connecticut
- Employment type: Travel/Contract
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Day, 3x12 hours, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
- Hours per week: 36
- Setting: Short-term acute care, Level I trauma center
Role Details
- Cardiac stepdown nursing assignment
- Average patient ratio: 1:4 on days and nights
- Floating within scope may be required
- First-time travelers are accepted
- Every other weekend required
- On-call is not required
- Block scheduling is not available
- Guaranteed hours
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Connecticut
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit (2 years of experience)
- PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
- ACLS
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIHSS
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Tele trained
- Competent to care for pre/post cardiac procedures
- Competent to care for cardiac surgery patients
- Competent with chest tubes
- Competent with pacer wires
Clinical Expectations
- Care for pre- and post-cardiac procedures and cardiac surgery patients
- Experience with chest tubes and pacer wires
- Manage medical/surgical cardiac patients at floor and stepdown levels of care for cardiology, cardiothoracic, and vascular patients
Compliance and Pre-Start Requirements
- Background check and education verification
- Drug screen
- Physical exam
- Fit testing
- TB questionnaire and TB documentation
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption
- COVID vaccination is preferred if received
- Color blindness testing
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam
- Several facility training modules and attestations are required before or around start
Additional Notes
- RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
- Parking is available for a monthly fee

Always given very easy assignments. Their MICU is combined with the MICU stepdown so travelers were put in stepdown once a week but it’s a 1:3 ratio there and assignments were fair
Cons
Very large unit so hard to get to know everyone/find people to help sometimes
