Registered Nurse (PCU) - Night Shift
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 13 weeks)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Unit & Patient Population
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with 35 beds
- Patient types: Adults and geriatrics with cardiac, nephrology, stroke, diabetes, and continuous EEG monitoring needs
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
- Nurse aide/patient care tech ratio: approximately 1:10 or 2:20
- Charge nurse present on each shift (charge nurse takes assignment)
- Fast-paced environment requiring critical thinking, problem solving, good communication, positive attitude, and teamwork
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years as a Registered Nurse
- At least 1 year of experience on a PCU or similar unit
- Current BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications
- Valid driver’s license required at submission (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation (resources provided)
- Ability to titrate drips including Cardizem, beta blockers, and seizure medications
Orientation & Training
- First week: onboarding
- 1-2 days of unit-specific orientation on the floor
Scheduling & Requirements
- Shifts: 0630-1900 and 1830-0700 (nights assigned)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: every third holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating required to medical floors, ICU, or rehab units
Policies & Additional Notes
- Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with a specific large healthcare system
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
This position is ideal for experienced PCU RNs seeking a night shift contract in a dynamic, supportive environment with a focus on critical care skills.
