Job Opportunity: Pediatric ER Registered Nurse

Location: Newark, New Jersey
Employment Type: Per Diem
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Position is for Pediatric Emergency Department (Peds ED) Registered Nurses.
  • Peds ED is separate from the Main ED.
  • May float to PICU and Peds units.
  • Shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM (overnight).
  • Orientation: 1 day computer training at home, 2nd day on-unit starting at 7 AM.
  • Charting system used: Epic.
  • Scrubs color: Navy Blue.
  • Maximum of 2 shifts per week allowed.
  • Cancellation policy: 3 instances of last-minute shift cancellations (within 24–48 hours) subject to review and possible cancellation or final warning.
  • Must complete de-escalation training course (cost $52 plus tax).
  • Must be committed to working at least 4 shifts per month at the assigned site.

Required Qualifications

  • License: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Jersey.
  • Experience: Minimum 1.5 years of Pediatric Emergency Department experience required.
  • Certifications:
    • Current AHA BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • PICU experience preferred.
  • Proficient ventilator management preferred.
  • Must complete Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) training (Iron Temple online and in-person portions).
  • 2 clinical references required, including at least 1 leadership reference from assignments within the last year.

Prior Travel Experience

  • No explicit prior travel experience required.

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history.
  • 2 references within the last 2 years (at least one managerial).
  • Background checks including criminal background, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and state-specific exclusions.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start.
  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility requirements.
  • Immunizations and titers: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Influenza vaccination or approved exemption.
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance required prior to start.
  • Color blindness exam if job tasks require color discrimination.
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology, dysrhythmia/EKG, IV therapy/infusion, and pass/fail testing (EKG/medication).
  • Annual education sign-off and facility-specific training including Baxter orientation videos.
  • Completion of RWJBH floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment.

Additional Notes

  • Free parking available in unrestricted spaces; garage monitored by security cameras.
  • 1-year separation required for previous staff returning.
  • Must be dedicated to completing all compliance and onboarding requirements promptly.
