Registered Nurse - Cardiac Mechanical Support Coordinator

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Coordinate care for patients with advanced cardiac mechanical support devices including Durable MCS (HM 3, Heartware, BrioVAD), IABP, and Impella devices.
• Provide expert rounding and troubleshooting for both inpatient and outpatient individuals.
• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on cardiac mechanical support devices.
• Float within clinical scope as needed to meet facility demands.
• Schedule: Monday to Friday, 5 shifts per week, 8 hours per shift (7:00 AM - 3:00 PM or 6:30 AM - 3:30 PM).
• Weekend requirement: 1 weekend per month plus 1 weekday on-call.
• Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval.
• Local radius for travel: 60 miles.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina.
• Minimum 2 years of CVICU experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Experience Requirements

• Specialty experience: Minimum 2 years as a Registered Nurse.
• Preferred clinical experience: At least 1 year managing advanced heart failure patients.
• Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted.

Work Environment & Facility Highlights

• Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital designation.
• Total staffed beds: 820.
• Charting system: EPIC.
• RN scrub color: Solid Royal Blue or White top with Royal Blue bottoms.
• Parking: Permit required with a $20 registration fee for garage access; additional fees may apply for other parking locations.
• Hurricane season (June-November) may require participation in emergency response teams.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License and Social Security Card required.
• Background check covering 7 years of residence/employment, including national and state criminal searches, sex offender registry, and FACIS 3.
• Education verification required; diploma or transcripts may be accepted as placeholders.
• Employment history verification for last 3 clinical employers.
• Two clinical references required.
• Competency exams and medication/pharmacology tests as applicable.
• Color blindness testing required prior to start.
• Physical exam updated annually, attesting ability to meet job demands.
• Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually.
• Drug screening: 10-panel urine drug screen within 90 days prior to start.
• Immunizations and titers required:

  • Tdap within 10 years or declination form.
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest X-ray if prior positive.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed.
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 - Mar 31).
• COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated.
• Radiation badge may be required depending on unit assignment.

Additional Notes

• Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
• Locals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
• Orientation includes completion of online modules prior to start; failure to complete may result in being sent home.
• Badge photo required prior to start (passport-style, solid light background, business casual attire).
• Emergency response participation may be required during hurricane season (June-November).
