Job Description

  • Provide nursing care to patients with a range of health problems from simple to complex under general supervision.
  • Responsible for an assigned group of patients.
  • Document patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed treatments.
  • Assist physicians with patient examinations and minor diagnostic procedures.
  • Monitor physiological data and intervene as necessary.
  • Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products.
  • Deliver competent patient care.
  • Communicate care plans to patients and families during hospitalization and at discharge.
  • Inform patients and families about hospital procedures.
  • Make referrals regarding patient care needs.
  • Delegate tasks to support staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Unit Details

  • Medical/Surgical unit; candidates with Operating Room experience will not be accepted.
  • Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience is required.
  • Acute care surgical floor experience is mandatory.
  • Preferred experience includes ENT and/or Transplant patient care.
  • Patient population includes pre- and post-surgical inpatients.
  • Care for patients with new drains, wounds, tracheostomies, ostomies, nasogastric tubes (NGT), or double lumen hemodialysis catheters (DHT).
  • Some patients require stepdown care.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios: 5:1 for surgical patients, 3:1 for stepdown area.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Oklahoma.
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Experience in an Acute Care setting.
  • Stepdown/Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience.
  • Experience caring for surgical patients post-operatively.
  • Experience caring for patients with new drains, tracheostomies, nasogastric tubes (NGTs), and double lumen hemodialysis catheters (DHTs).

Pros

Very nice hospital, I like the fact that I never have to put in orders or sign any consent form. The doctors do all this. There is a lot of hours. On the clinical side, there is a lot to learn. On my unit I got to see so many surgical cases that I never seen in my entire career only because I was on a surgical unit.

Cons

It all depends on the team you are working with. They either break you or make you.
