MedSurg RN

Location

  • Jackson, Mississippi

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Schedule

  • 12-hour nights: 7p-7a
  • 36 hours per week
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or 2 weekends per month, with possible higher need based on department needs
  • Holiday coverage required; clinicians must be available to work 2 of 3 upcoming holidays and rotate with regular staff
  • Travelers are expected to fill holes; block scheduling may be accommodated if the schedule allows

Required Qualifications

  • RN license
  • BLS certification
  • Level 1 trauma experience or experience at a larger facility with many surgeries/high-acuity patients
  • Must be comfortable with lines and chest tubes
  • Flu vaccine required; only medical exemptions are allowed with documentation from a health care provider
  • Fingerprint requirement must be completed before start, either in person at the hospital 1 week prior or remotely with 2 weeks for processing

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACLS for charge RNs

Unit Details

  • Med/Surg unit covering 2 West, 6 West, 7 South, 4 Wiser, and 5 Wiser
  • Bed counts: 2 West 13, 6 West 14, 7 South 12, 4 Wiser 30, 5 Wiser 25
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5, sometimes up to 1:6 depending on acuity
  • Common patient populations include general med-surg, congestive heart failure, diabetes, post-surgical, trauma, acute kidney injury, sickle cell anemia, gastroparesis, and respiratory illnesses

Clinical Responsibilities / Work Environment

  • RN may titrate heparin drips
  • Patients are monitored on all units with tele capability
  • Charge nurse takes a light assignment and may take a full load if needed
  • Nurse aids are available on all units
  • RT support is available for CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow

Floating

  • Float within skillset across all med-surg units

Orientation

  • First day includes paperwork, attestations, logins for Omnicell and Epic, unit tour, and scheduling discussion
  • Two additional shifts with a preceptor

Dress Code

  • Solid-color professional scrubs in any color
