Med Surg Float RN - 13 Week Contract

Location: Quincy, Illinois
Facility: Blessing Hospital

Unit Information

• Unit: Med Surg/Telemetry - Inpatient Surgical (3rd floor)
• Beds: 48 (across two buildings)
• Nurse:Patient Ratios:

  • Days: 1:4-6
  • Nights: 1:5-6 with LPN support
• Nursing Model: Primary care nursing model frequently used
• Orientation:

  • 1 twelve-hour shift on unit of hire
  • First day 12-14 hours for competencies, computer modules, and general orientation

Required Certifications

• BLS (AHA)
• NIHSS

Patient Population / Common Diagnoses

• Neuro surgeries: laminectomy, cervical fusion
• Orthopedic: total joint replacements (hips/knees)
• General surgery: ostomies, hernia repair, belly surgery
• Vascular: fem-pop bypass
• Dialysis catheter insertions (dialysis unit also on 3rd floor)
• Amputations: BKA, AKA
• Other: PICC lines, TPN, lipids, PCA pumps, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain management (narcotics), sepsis, urgent OR cases

Experience / Skills Required

• Minimum 1 year surgical experience
• Total joint replacement experience required
• Knowledge of PCA pumps and narcotic usage
• Experience with TPN and lipids
• Sepsis management skills
• Familiarity with reversal drugs (e.g., Narcan)

Clinical Responsibilities

• RN required to titrate heparin drips per protocol
• RNs interpret telemetry strips (monitored by tele tech)
• Tele monitors brand: Draeger
• Charge nurse usually takes a smaller patient assignment to assist
• Nurse aides available but may be pulled for sitter duties, especially nights
• Respiratory therapy manages CPAP, BiPAP (occasionally), and Airvo

Scheduling & Shifts

• 3 shifts of 12 hours starting at 7 AM
• Schedules released 6 weeks in advance
• No guaranteed block scheduling, but scheduling needs can be discussed with leadership
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
• Holiday rotation with core staff
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating only to like units; if floated to higher acuity, work as support without patient load

Additional Notes

• Fast-paced environment with heavy patient load
• Can admit 8-12 surgical patients per day plus discharges
• Night shifts are 12 hours every other week
• Dress code: black scrubs
