Overview

Facility and Unit

• Unit: Main Operating Room within a level-one academic trauma center
• Size: 21 OR suites covering all surgical specialties, including trauma, transplant, ortho, neuro, ENT, GU-GYN, and robotics
• Staffing mix: 75% registered nurses and 25% certified surgical technologists
• Role expectations: RNs are trained to both scrub and circulate surgical procedures

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in South Carolina
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Operating Room (OR) experience of 1 year, including OR experience within the last year
• Experience working with Level 1 trauma patients
• Ophthalmology experience (retinal detachments, vitrectomy, cataract removal, eye trauma)

Assignment Details

• On-call: Yes, specific to ophthalmology cases, up to 4-6 call shifts every 4 weeks
• Float: Yes, the traveler may need to float within scope to meet facility needs, including between like units and sister facilities
• Block schedule: Can be requested, but requires manager approval and depends on unit needs
• Local candidates: Accepted case-by-case, within a 60-mile radius
• Return-to-office (RTO) arrangements: All RTO must be included at the time of submission. Approval is based on facility needs.
• Hurricane season (June through November): All employees and contractors may be assigned to emergency response teams. Travelers should not confirm a new or extended assignment during this season if this is a problem. August and September are the peak months.

Onboarding and Compliance Requirements

• Background and eligibility: Annual background check, EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, and a South Carolina state exclusion list
• Licensure: Primary source verification and NURSYS verification
• Health documents: Physical exam, drug screen (10-panel, within 90 days of start), negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 90 days of start), annual TB questionnaire, Tdap, and titers or vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and hepatitis B
• Respiratory protection: N95 fit test within 90 days before start, renewed annually. Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs) are not available, so travelers must bring their own if needed.
• Vaccination: Flu vaccine or medical/religious exemption required for the flu season. COVID vaccination is highly preferred but not required.
• Other: Color blind testing before start; 2 clinical references; employment application listing all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps; verification of the last 3 clinical employers
• Documents: Copy of driver's license or state ID and Social Security card
• Badge photo: Passport-style, on file before the Wednesday prior to start
