Registered Nurse – Stroke/Neuro PCU
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift Details
- Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM) standard; 4x12-hour shifts available by request
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week block
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
- Call-off policy: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Telemetry Progressive Care Unit (PCU) specializing in stroke and neurology patients
- Joint Commission certified primary stroke center
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5, staffing goal 1:4
- Remote telemetry monitoring with tele-sitting to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
- Floating within skillset required
- IV drips managed include Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Clinical Skills
- Cardiac monitoring, emergency response, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care
- Medication administration including cardiac drips (no titration)
- Respiratory support: nasal cannula, oxygen administration, non-invasive airway management
- Experience in Neuro PCU care
- Knowledge of isolation precautions and telemetry settings across PCU, IMC, and stepdown units
License Requirements
- Active Virginia RN license or Compact RN license required
- Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
Experience Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse with Neuro PCU experience
- Prior travel experience preferred but not required
- First-time travelers accepted
Documentation & Compliance Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with address within 100 miles of facility required within 48 hours of signing
- E-Verify or attestation required
- 7-year background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, completed within 1 year of start
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Education verification of highest earned degree required (transcript/diploma may be accepted as placeholder)
- NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming freedom from communicable diseases
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
- Fit test for mask within 1 year, updated annually (onsite fit testing possible if needed)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Required immunizations or positive titers: Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccination documentation or mask and declination form during flu season
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background, no selfies or filters)
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality agreements prior to start
- Completion of new hire paperwork and orientation manual review (not required for inpatient RNs)
- Two clinical references required (hospital evaluations accepted)
- Annual skills checklist update required

Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, preferably within the last year
- Experience in Neuro PCU (Progressive Care Unit) care
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with non-invasive airway management
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
