Job Opportunity: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics Therapist

Location: Oakland, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 8 weeks


Position Summary

Seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with at least 3 years of experience to perform respiratory therapy modalities in a progressive healthcare environment. The role involves technical procedures on complex life support systems and requires critical decision-making affecting patient care across a wide range of patient ages (neonatal to geriatric).


Work Schedule

  • Days, 3 shifts of 12 hours each (3/12s)
  • Every other weekend
  • No call required
  • No floating

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • California RRT License

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate and manage all respiratory care equipment and modalities
  • Administer medications and oxygen therapy as prescribed
  • Manage ventilators and wean patients from invasive and noninvasive life support (including Continuous Ventilators, BIPAP, CPAP)
  • Perform diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy, blood gas analysis, sputum induction, and bedside spirometry
  • Provide secretion management and chest physical therapy
  • Monitor patients using pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2, apnea monitors, and conscious sedation
  • Manage airway and provide cardiac support during emergency codes
  • Educate patients on breathing exercises and home respiratory care
  • Provide neonatal therapy and ventilatory care
  • Complete accurate documentation of all therapies in medical and departmental records
  • Maintain compliance with clinical and administrative policies
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, and families
  • Participate in in-service education, staff meetings, and respond to Code Blue calls

Education

  • High School Diploma required
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy preferred
  • Equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of formal degree

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check including aliases, county searches, sex offender registry, education verification, and other federal/state checks
  • Drug screening (9-panel, excluding marijuana/cannabinoids due to CA law) within 6 months of start
  • Employment history verification covering 7 years with no gaps over 30 days
  • References: 2 professional references required for clinical/allied acute care candidates
  • Various facility-specific documents and attestations must be reviewed and signed prior to start

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (exceptions apply)
  • Immunizations and/or titers for:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
    • TB screening (annual renewal required)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Hepatitis B series or declination
    • Varicella (Chickenpox)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (Nov-April) or signed declination
  • Negative drug test within 6 months
  • Respiratory safety clearance prior to start, renewed annually

Additional Certifications (Position-Dependent)

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • CCRN (Critical Care RN)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
  • IV Certification (if applicable)
  • Other certifications as required by specific job duties or facility

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam if applicable
  • General competency exams with minimum passing scores

Notes

  • Candidate must be prepared to complete all required facility-specific orientation, confidentiality agreements, and compliance documents prior to start
  • Religious exemptions for certain requirements (e.g., PAPR, vaccines) may be considered on a case-by-case basis with proper documentation and approval
