Job Description Highlights

• Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start (required for all Medsurg nurses regardless of sub-specialty)

Required Qualifications

• License: Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Tennessee (Compact or Single State)
• Certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – required for all candidates
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – preferred
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) – required for all RN candidates
• Competencies:

  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (must score 80% or higher within 12 months prior to start)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
  • Core Competency Exams (Parts I, II, III) with minimum 80% pass rate, updated annually
  • Color Blind Testing (Ishihara test or equivalent within 12 months)
• Other:

  • Must be able to float to other units as needed
  • Must be able to work with a patient ratio of approximately 1:7-8

Experience Requirements

Health and Background Requirements

• Physical exam within 12 months prior to start, confirming fitness for duty
• Negative TB test (QGold or Skin Test) within 1 year; chest x-ray if prior positive TB
• Drug screening within 45 days of start, including a comprehensive panel of substances
• Immunizations/vaccinations required or proof of immunity:

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer
  • Hepatitis B – vaccine series, titer, or declination
  • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer
  • Flu vaccine required for starts on or after 9/8/2025 (exemptions only for medical/religious reasons)
• Background check covering 7 years, including SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, abuse registry, and federal/statewide searches
• Two supervisory references from the past 3 years
• Employment application with 7-year work history and no unexplained gaps over 30 days
• Unit-specific skills checklist updated within the last year
