Registered Nurse (MedSurg) - Phoenix, AZ


Position Details

  • Specialty: Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) with Telemetry float
  • Shift: Days
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Unit Size: 22 private rooms
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend days per pay period (Saturday/Sunday), same for travelers
  • Holiday Requirement: Included in staff rotation
  • Orientation: 2 shifts with a preceptor on the unit
  • Scrub Color: Navy Blue

Patient Population & Care

  • Common diagnoses: post-operative patients, sepsis, pneumonia, COPD, diabetes, infections
  • No telemetry on the specific unit, but telemetry experience preferred due to floating to other units
  • Respiratory therapists assigned to the unit; nurses are not expected to manage respiratory equipment directly
  • Heparin drips titrated; no cardiac drips titrated by RNs
  • No patient care technicians (PCTs); a resource RN supports the unit alongside the charge RN

Floating & Additional Duties

  • Floating required to other med/surg and telemetry units within the hospital
  • Travelers are the first to float; ICU nurse ratio is 1:3
  • Must pass a dysrhythmia exam prior to contract acceptance due to floating to telemetry
  • SIMs Lab training required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
  • Additional education on lifts, restraints, and wound care provided during orientation
  • Must maintain sterile field competency during procedures

Required Qualifications

  • Current RN license
  • BLS (AHA) certification required
  • Must have Level 1 Trauma experience
  • Recent med/surg experience required
  • Telemetry experience preferred
  • Charge nurse experience preferred
  • No first-time travelers accepted
  • Must pass dysrhythmia exam (2 attempts allowed; failure results in 6-month disqualification)
  • Must have own vehicle for travel assignments
  • Appearance standards: natural hair color, no facial piercings, men must be clean-shaven for fit testing

Work Environment & Support

  • House supervisor available 24/7
  • Manager available Monday through Friday
  • New unit with ongoing development and team building
  • No call or standby requirements

Additional Notes

  • 50-mile radius travel rule applies (no local rates)
  • Pass/fail exam on day 1 of orientation
  • Travelers expected to be competent in sterile technique and common nursing skills related to Foley and central line care
  • Commitment to a unified, growing team environment
