Travel/Contract Registered Nurse – Behavioral Health (Psych Adult)

Location: North Providence, Rhode Island
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

• Specialty: Registered Nurse – Behavioral Health (Psych Adult)
• Shift: 3x12 hour nights (07:00 - 19:30)
• Float: Only to Behavioral Health Units
• Weekend Coverage: Every other weekend
• Patient Age Group: Adults and Geriatrics
• Unit Type: Inpatient locked behavioral health unit

Required Experience

• Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years (higher value from description and title)
• Prior travel experience: Not required (unit accepts first-time travelers)
• Previous charge experience: Preferred
• Community hospital experience: Preferred

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support) – Required
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) – Preferred
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – Required for ER, RRT, MS/Tele units (may be applicable)

Required Skills and Competencies

• Experience with adult and geriatric psychiatric diagnoses including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Depressive disorders
  • Psychotic disorders (including schizophrenia-spectrum)
  • Personality disorders
  • PTSD and trauma-related disorders
  • Substance use disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Self-injurious and suicidal behavior
  • Assault/violence management
• Behavioral health nursing skills:

  • Use of seclusion and physical hold protocols
  • Emergent chemical restraints
  • Voluntary/involuntary commitment procedures
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Psychoeducation and behavior management
• Medication administration (PO, rectal, IM, IV, SC, etc.) including:

  • Antianxiety, antidepressant, antipsychotic, mood stabilizers, sedatives/analgesics
• Clinical skills:

  • Starting and maintaining IVs
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Foley catheter insertion and maintenance
  • Interpretation and communication of lab values
  • Cardiac arrest/CPR

Systems Used

• Medication system: Omnicell
• Documentation system: Meditech
• Communication system: SBAR

Required Licensure

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Rhode Island

Health and Compliance Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start
• Tdap vaccine within 10 years
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months
• MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titer
• Hepatitis B vaccination series, titer, or declination
• Varicella vaccination, positive titer, or provider documentation
• 9-panel drug screen after position acceptance
• Seasonal flu vaccine or approved declination during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31)
• Respiratory safety clearance (required annually)

Background and Screening Requirements

• Background check including SSN trace, county searches, nationwide sex offender check
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, annually thereafter
• Fingerprinting required for RN license in Rhode Island (new prints required for each assignment)

• Candidate must complete facility-specific onboarding documents and confidentiality agreements prior to start
• Skills checklist and competency exams required annually as applicable
• Float assignments limited to behavioral health units only

This position is ideal for experienced behavioral health RNs comfortable working nights in an inpatient locked psychiatric unit with adult and geriatric populations. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
