Stepdown Cardiac Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work in Post Cardiac Cath Unit (PCCU) caring for pre- and post-cardiac catheterization patients and some emergency department overflow.
- Responsibilities include pulling arterial/venous sheaths post-cath, managing TR bands, new pacemakers/defibrillators, and Watchman devices post-procedure.
- Discharge patients typically within 24-48 hours post-procedure unless requiring CABG consult or transfer.
- Patient population includes adults with diagnoses such as NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, atrial fibrillation/flutter, bradycardia, tachycardia, heart blocks, SVT, V-tach, sinus arrhythmia, and patients with AV pacemakers/defibrillators.
- No chest tubes or critical drips; permitted drips include nitroglycerin, angiomax, heparin, electrolytes, fluids, and antibiotics.
- Patient ratio: 1:5 on days, nights, and weekends.
- Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (19:30 - 07:00), every other weekend required.
- First-time travelers may be considered if they have cardiac patient experience.
- Clinicians may be floated within scope to meet facility needs.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Cardiac Stepdown nursing
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience and competency in MS/Tele and Telemetry monitoring
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good health and no physical limitations.
- Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required; PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
- Negative TB test within 3 months of start (2-step skin test or preferred QGold/TSpot). Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Required vaccinations or proof of immunity: Tdap, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B (with options for declination if series completed).
- Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless approved medical or religious exemption is granted.
- COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory; proof of vaccination or signed declination accepted.
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a panel for multiple substances; no placeholders or pending results accepted.
Orientation & Training
- Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management training.
- Completion of required inservice training modules and passing associated exams prior to start (approx. 4 hours).
- Review of facility-specific policies such as blood administration, dress code, math calculation for medication administration, and EKG review required before start.
Additional Information
- 36 hours guaranteed per week.
- Holiday time off requests limited to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays.
- Schedule blocking is not guaranteed; discuss preferences during interview.
- 100-mile radius rule for travel; exceptions require facility approval.
- Parking is free for travelers.
- Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs.
- Charting system: Cerner.
Required Documentation for Submission
- Valid driver’s license.
- Social Security card (legible).
- RN license verification (NURSYS verification within 30 days of start).
- Background check within 30 days including 7-year criminal history, SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks if applicable.
- Required federal exclusions and sanction checks (SAM, OIG) completed independently within 30 days and updated annually.
- Skills checklist for specialty (MS/Tele for this unit).
- References and all required certifications uploaded in one PDF.
