Registered Nurse (MS/Tele) - Travel/Contract Position

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)

Job Description

  • Float required to other Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units, including forensics and inpatient units.
  • Must be comfortable working with the prison population.
  • 1 year of nursing experience required.
  • Both local and first-time travel nurses are accepted.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Tennessee (Primary Source Verification required).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA certification required; must not expire within 90 days of assignment start.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA certification required; must not expire within 90 days of assignment start.
  • NIH Stroke Certification - AHA or APEX only; must be current during assignment.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) or MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior) accepted in lieu of CPI; must be current during assignment.
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM, STABLE) but are not mandatory for this MS/Tele role.

Required Competencies & Testing

  • Must complete facility-required competency exams including:
    • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam
    • EKG and Sedation exams (required for Telemetry, Med Surg, ICU, ER, Forensics, PACU, Endoscopy) with minimum passing scores (Med Surg, Forensics, Telemetry, PACU: 84%; ER, ICU, Endoscopy: 90%).
    • Pass/fail testing must be completed within 48 hours of receiving login credentials prior to start. Two attempts allowed; failure after second attempt results in contract termination.

Background & Screening Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID) must be carried during work hours.
  • Social Security Number/Card required for system access.
  • 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually, covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated with each contract renewal.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Initial physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands; updated annually.
  • Fit mask test (3M 1860s, 1860, or 1870+) updated annually.
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 6 months; if past positive, clear chest X-ray within 1 year plus annual TB questionnaire.
  • Required immunizations or titers:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (1 adult dose required)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required year-round.
  • COVID-19 vaccination required prior to start; medical/religious exemptions considered.
  • 9-panel drug screen (including marijuana) required annually.

Documentation & Orientation

  • Must submit a passport-style photo (solid white background, full face visible, no hats/masks/sunglasses) prior to start for badge.
  • Must complete and bring facility-specific orientation packets and guidebooks to orientation.
  • Must complete assigned LMS education modules 5 days prior to start (15-18 modules depending on unit, 4-8 hours total).
  • Must submit glucose and pressure ulcer training certificates from LMS to compliance staff.
  • Must complete and submit new hire forms, confidentiality agreements, compliance acknowledgments, and other required facility documents by the Tuesday prior to start.
  • Parking permit application required prior to start.

References & Evaluations

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required.
  • Performance evaluations required if worked with the system over 1 year; internal evaluations if over 2 years.
  • Complete employment application/resume and applicable skills checklists updated annually.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must be comfortable floating to multiple units including forensic and inpatient settings.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.
  • Candidates must be prepared to work night shifts with 12-hour durations.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Tennessee.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Minimum of 1 year of Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Current CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) or MAB (Management of Assaultive Behavior) certification.
