Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - MedSurg Step-Down Unit
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Specialty: Medical-Surgical (MSDU) Registered Nurse
- Shift: 3x12 hour night shifts (7:00 PM - 7:00 AM)
- Weekend Schedule: Every other weekend
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty
- Patient Ratio: Able to manage 1:5 to 1:7 patient ratio on MedSurg unit
- First Time Traveler: Accepted
- Local Radius Requirement: Must live within 75 miles of the facility
- Charting System: Must have experience with EPIC electronic health records
Unit Description
- 26-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU), a critical care step-down unit
- Patient population includes adult acute care patients requiring specialized care beyond general MedSurg
- Continuous pulse-oximetry and telemetry monitoring for all patients
- Care includes airway management, acute BIPAP support, arterial and central lines, and titrated IV medication infusions
- Team approach with vigilance and compassionate care
Required Certifications
- New York State RN License (must have license in hand before start)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) as required by unit
- Other certifications may be required based on unit description (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM)
Clinical Skills & Responsibilities
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response: interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, use of rapid response/code teams
- IV therapy and phlebotomy: peripheral line care and management
- Respiratory care: nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks, non-invasive airway management
- Adherence to isolation precautions and infection control protocols
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Minimum 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- MedSurg nursing experience
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) issued by American Heart Association
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) certification
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course) certification
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with EPIC electronic health records
- Tech Cert Verification - National
- Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
- State License 1 Verification
- NURSYS Verification (RN, LPN/LVN, AP)
Health and Compliance Requirements
Candidates must complete the following within 5 days of contract signing and maintain as required:
- Physical exam (within 1 year)
- Fit mask testing (annual)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 1 year)
- Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
- Drug screening (within 30 days of start)
- Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
- Eye exam (Snellen) within 1 year
- COVID vaccination preferred but not required
Background and Verification
- 7-year criminal background check including felony checks
- Education verification from primary source
- Employment history verification (minimum 2 past employments)
- Required state-specific checks including sex offender registry and Medicaid exclusion list
Additional Notes
- Candidates must have government-issued photo ID
- Orientation and safety manual acknowledgment required
- Photo for badge required
- References required for some candidates (2 references within 3 years)
This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with MedSurg experience looking for a travel contract opportunity in a critical care step-down setting with night shifts. Prior travel experience is not required.
