Job Opportunity: Medsurg/Onc RN
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Patient Population
- Department: Medsurg/Oncology (core staff to administer chemotherapy)
- No oncology provider on site during the day
- 31 beds
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Adults and geriatrics with diagnoses including strokes (stroke unit, some acute but no thrombectomies), hypertension, COPD, cellulitis, CHF, atrial fibrillation (non-RVR), chest pain, post-ICU MI, altered mental status/behavioral issues, some telemetry, surgical overflow (no joint or cranial cases), oncology patients receiving chemo
Experience & Skills Required
- Specialty: Medsurg/Oncology nursing
- Years of experience: Not explicitly stated; preference for experience with tracheostomy and BiPAP but not required
- Prior travel experience: Not required; first-time travelers are welcome
- RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Lasix, Heparin; Lasix experience preferred but not mandatory)
- RNs do not need to interpret EKG strips; telemetry techs handle strip reading
- Experience with stable BiPAP and established trachs with blow-by oxygen preferred
Certifications
- BLS required
- NIHSS certification mentioned
Shift & Scheduling
- Shifts:
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Scheduling: Manager sets schedule; block scheduling may be considered if unit needs are met
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: As needed
- No call or standby requirement
Orientation & Support
- Unit-specific orientation: 1-2 shifts on the floor
- Charge nurse available on each shift as a resource (usually no assignment unless staffing need)
- Nurse aides/patient care techs present with a ratio of 1:8
- Telemetry/monitor techs available on unit
- Floating: May float to other MedSurg units; telemetry strips handled by telemetry RN; occasional float to ER; no float to mother-baby unit
- Scrub color: No specific color required; scrubs not provided
- Culture: Family-oriented unit with strong teamwork; travelers are supported
Additional Notes
- Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with the same health system
- Return to office (RTO) needed within 7 days of contract start for this 13-week assignment
