Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Location: Denver, Colorado
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

  • Cardiac progressive/intermediate care unit with 30 beds
  • Staff includes approximately 65 members: RNs and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)
  • Day shift staffing: 1 Charge RN, 5-8 RNs, 2-4 PCTs
  • Night shift staffing: 1 Charge RN, 5-8 nurses, 2-3 PCTs
  • Patient ratios typically 1:4, sometimes 1:5
  • Equipment used: telemetry monitors, transport monitors, suction devices, feeding pumps, tracheostomy care, BiPAP, CPAP, heated high flow oxygen, chest tubes, Foley catheters, pacer wires/pacemakers, IV pumps, sequential compression devices (SCD) pumps
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system: Meditech

Typical Procedures and Patient Care

  • Post-cardiac catheterization care including right & left heart caths, TAVRs, ablations, Watchman device care, pacemaker implantations, TR band management, neurovascular checks
  • Post-thoracic surgery care including VATS/RATS, resections, lobectomies, chest tube management
  • Pre- and post-operative care for open-heart surgeries such as CABGs, MVRs, AVRs, aortic dissection repairs
  • Vascular surgery post-operative care

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Colorado
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Preferred Skills (Not mandatory but highly valued)

  • Chest tube management and removal
  • Removal of pacer wires
  • 12-lead EKG interpretation
  • Oxygen management including BiPAP and heated high flow
  • Experience with drips such as heparin, diltiazem, amiodarone, Lasix, dobutamine, milrinone, ketamine
