Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Immediate backfill needed; must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
  • No return to office (RTO) allowed for July 4th holiday.
  • Work on a General Medical/Oncology step-down unit caring for medical and oncology step-down patients.
  • Oncology/Chemotherapy experience highly preferred.
  • Administer chemotherapy via IV and start IVs.
  • Use equipment including Welch Allyn Vital Sign Towers, Sigma IV Pumps, and EPIC for documentation.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-6; ratios may flex with support staff and chemotherapy admits.
  • Floating to other med-surg areas including Acute Unit (AU) and Emergency Room (ER) to care for med-surg patients.
  • Weekend work every other weekend; weekends assigned by manager/scheduler, other days self-scheduled.
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated upon request.
  • Any requests for time off after offer must be discussed with onsite manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Step-down nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Experience administering chemotherapy via IV

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
  • Complete E-Verify and I-9 documentation as required.
  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, with multiple components (SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, etc.).
  • Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions/units; process coordinated via compliance team.
  • Education verification with copy of highest degree or diploma.
  • Professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
  • Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years of work history, no gaps.
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if 10-panel).
  • Immunizations and health requirements:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine).
    • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required.
    • Annual TB questionnaire.
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; exemptions not accepted.
    • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination required.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/spiritual exemption required for candidates starting after November 1; proof or exemption due by December 1.
  • Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) for acute care roles; appointment must be scheduled and documented.
  • Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start.
  • Vaccine exemption forms required if applicable, with approval process that may take time.

  • No call responsibilities.
  • Charge RN typically not assigned patients.
  • Chemotherapy admissions reduce patient assignment ratios.
  • Floating to other med-surg areas expected.
  • Scheduling flexibility with some manager coordination.
