Registered Nurse - Pediatric Operating Room

Location

  • Tacoma, Washington

Job Details

  • Shift: 10-hour day shifts (06:45 - 17:15)
  • Hours per week: 40
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • On call: Yes; approximately 2 weeknights (7 PM - 7 AM) and 1 weekend (7 PM Friday - 7 AM Monday) every 6 weeks with a 30-minute response time
  • Weekend rotation: Unlikely, but possible if weekend staff are off; typically on call only
  • Floating: May assist PICU and NICU cases; assist anesthesia with procedures such as intubations in MRI or IR
  • EMR system: EPIC
  • Parking: Free parking lot provided
  • Scrub color: Provided

Patient Population & Case Types

  • Patient ages: Neonates through 18 years old, including adult-sized patients
  • Common diagnoses and procedures include:
    • Trauma: pediatric traumas such as motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, shaken baby syndrome
    • Neurosurgery: craniectomies, external ventricular drains (EVDs), shunts
    • Spine: scoliosis repairs, spinal injuries
    • Urology: hypospadias/hyperplasia repair, orchiopexy, orchiectomy, inguinal hernias
    • Gynecology: ovarian torsion, ovarian cysts, endometriosis lesions, IUD placements
    • Orthopedics: pinnings, ACL repairs, arthroscopies, hip osteotomies
    • Oncology: tumor resections
    • ENT: tonsillectomies/adenoidectomies, PE tubes, tracheostomies
    • General surgery: GI surgeries including laparoscopic/open appendectomies and cholecystectomies
    • Dental and ophthalmology cases (preferred)
    • Robotics surgery (DaVinci XI) preferred

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years acute Operating Room experience; if only 2 years, must be high-level experience
  • Candidates with combined adult and pediatric experience will be considered
  • First-time travelers generally not accepted unless with 5+ years extensive OR and pediatric experience
  • Licensure: Washington State or compact RN license
  • Certifications: BLS and PALS required; CNOR preferred

Skills

  • Highly preferred skills include:
    • IV starts
    • Scrub experience
    • Robotics surgery experience
    • High-level neuro, ophthalmology, and dental cases
    • Circulating experience with the above case types
  • Manager approval required if missing preferred skills

Additional Requirements

  • Must complete standard healthcare onboarding and compliance documentation, including but not limited to:
    • Flu vaccination documentation
    • Annual core competencies
    • CPR certification (BLS)
    • Criminal background check and authorization
    • Drug screening
    • Immunizations (Hep B, MMR, Varicella, TDAP)
    • Physical exam and PPD test
    • Employment authorization and photo ID verification
    • HIPAA and confidentiality training
    • Skills checklist and unit competency verification

  • Prior travel experience is generally not accepted unless the candidate has extensive OR and pediatric experience (5+ years)
