Registered Nurse (L&D/PP) - Travel Contract in California

Job Overview

  • Specialty: Labor & Delivery / Postpartum (L&D/PP)
  • Location: Oxnard, California
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Unit Beds:
    • L&D: 7 beds
    • Triage: 4 beds + 2 overflow beds
    • Postpartum: 27 beds with a 5-bed nursery
  • Average Births: Approximately 3 births per day (1,545 per year)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2-3 years of L&D/PP nursing experience (use higher value)
  • Active California RN license
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), AWHONN (Advanced Fetal Monitoring - intermediate or advanced)
  • C-section experience: Must be able to circulate in C-section suites (scrubbing not required)
  • Postpartum experience required for L&D nurses; postpartum nurses do not necessarily need L&D experience
  • Prior travel experience preferred (at least one prior travel contract)
  • COVID-19 vaccination required (with certification)

Clinical Environment & Responsibilities

  • Follows AWHONN guidelines for nurse-to-patient ratios
  • EMR system: Cerner
  • Fetal Heart Monitoring system: FetalLink (integrates with Cerner)
  • Nurses float between L&D, Postpartum, and NICU as needed:
    • L&D nurses must have postpartum experience and assist in NICU with grower/feeders
    • Postpartum nurses assist in L&D and NICU within scope
  • OB techs assist with C-sections, deliveries, stocking supplies, and patient intake
  • Charge nurse/shift manager roles available on unit
  • No ventilators or IV team on unit
  • Respiratory therapy and pharmacy available 24/7
  • OB/Neonatologist available on call 24/7 with 30-minute response time

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Call: Optional but preferred; discuss during interview
  • Holidays: Typically one major and one minor holiday worked alongside permanent staff
  • Orientation: 3 shifts of floor-specific orientation
  • Scrub color: Navy

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • High-risk deliveries of any gestational age
  • EMT drop-offs
  • Patients with substance abuse and withdrawal
  • Many Spanish-speaking patients
  • Patients often present without prenatal care
  • Transfers to higher-level facilities occur if patients are critically ill
