Registered Nurse (RN) – MICU / Progressive Care Unit

Location: Fort Wayne, Indiana
Employment Type: Traveler - Backfill
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 3:00 AM – 3:00 PM (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 (Three 12-hour shifts per week)
Schedule: Traditional weekday plus weekend rotation

Unit Overview

• Mixed acuity unit with both ICU and Progressive Care patients.
• Medical ICU: 24 beds; Progressive Care: 12 beds.
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Progressive Care: 1:3 or 1:4 with transfers/medical patients
  • ICU: 1:2 or 1:3 with transfers/medical patients
• Travelers primarily care for Progressive Care patients but will also care for ICU patients.
• Floating required to all ICU, Progressive Care, and Medsurg units, maintaining a maximum 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio.
• Equipment used includes Phillips heart monitors, Epic (EMR), Pyxis, EKG machine, and dopplers.
• Dress code: Caribbean blue scrubs; jackets must be black, white, or Caribbean blue; undershirts must be black or white.

Job Responsibilities

• Care for ventilated patients.
• Initiate and titrate IV drips including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
• Assist with intubations and line placements.
• Monitor critically ill patients with diagnoses such as sepsis, respiratory failure (acute and chronic), renal failure (acute and chronic), myocardial infarctions, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia.
• Provide care for both ICU and progressive patients on a mixed acuity unit.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1.5 years ICU experience required; 2 years ICU experience preferred.
• Valid Indiana RN license.
• BLS (AHA only) certification.
• ACLS (AHA only) certification.
• Strong background in medical patients and critical care.
• Ability to critically think, reason, be flexible, team-oriented, and personable.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior travel experience preferred.
• Experience in Level 1 or Level 2 facilities preferred.

Orientation and Training

• One day of unit-specific onboarding.
• Workforce development training including policy review and Epic EMR access.

Additional Notes

• Travelers will never work alone.
• Must be able to float across multiple units while maintaining safe nurse-to-patient ratios.
