Job Opportunity: Cardio Thoracic ICU Registered Nurse

Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Work Schedule

  • Night shifts, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Some holidays required
  • No on-call duties

Unit & Specialty Requirements

  • Experience in Cardiothoracic ICU (CVICU) required
  • Experience with NextStage CVVH machine required
  • Experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and/or Acuity Adaptable areas preferred
  • Basic Arrhythmia experience required
  • Must pass a Telemetry test prior to start

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Wisconsin Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Minimum of 1 year of Cardiothoracic ICU (CVICU) experience, with recent CVICU experience within the last year
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Arrhythmia experience

Required Testing & Competencies

  • Telemetry test (Adult Telemetry Test via LMS) with strict passing criteria:
    • Minimum 80% overall score
    • 100% in lethal rhythms subcategory
    • Correct answers on all 3rd degree heart block questions
  • Candidates allowed up to 3 attempts with remediation required after 2nd failure
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Annual skills checklist required

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days prior to start, including all locations lived/worked/schooled in last 7 years
  • Wisconsin Caregiver Background Check and BID form required
  • Education verification as applicable
  • Drug screening per standard clinical requirements
  • Physical exam (to meet agency standard)
  • Photo for badge (passport-style, no selfies or headwear except for religious/medical reasons)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Tuberculosis (TB) testing: IGRA blood test or two-step skin test with documentation
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses or positive titers; medical/religious exemptions accepted with proper documentation
  • Varicella: 2 doses or positive titer; medical/religious exemptions accepted
  • Hepatitis B vaccination series or documented declination form
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required annually during flu season)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination proof (if applicable)
  • Meningococcal vaccine or declination (if working in Microbiology)

Additional Notes

  • Two clinical references within the last 3 years required (agency standard)
  • Employment application required
  • Orientation includes acknowledgment of safety manual and pass/fail testing policies
  • Facility-specific forms and immunization waivers may be required depending on exemptions

This position is ideal for experienced Cardiothoracic ICU RNs with strong telemetry and arrhythmia skills, comfortable working night shifts in a high-acuity environment.
