Travel Registered Nurse (Step Down Unit)
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Description
- 12-bed Step Down unit (6 North) utilizing critical care and neuroscience principles at the Intermediate level
- Patient populations include:
- Transfers from Neuro ICU
- Neuro trauma patients
- Subarachnoid, intraventricular, or intracerebral hemorrhage
- ENT cancer patients post tumor resection and flap reconstruction
- Post-operative spine patients
- Various neurological conditions
- Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 3 patients
- Shift: Days
- Schedule: Every other weekend and every other holiday off
- Time off: Can approve 40 hours
Required Qualifications
- License: Valid Virginia RN license (VA license pending acceptable for submission)
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as a Registered Nurse (default to higher if conflicting info; here 1 year implied)
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for this unit)
- Skills:
- Epic electronic health record experience required
- Other:
- Must adhere to UVA’s float policy
Prior Travel Experience

Compliance & Screening Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year criminal history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, education verification, and others as per facility policy
- Drug testing (10-panel including marijuana and fentanyl) within 2 months of start, updated annually
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable)
- Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella vaccinations or positive titers
- Hepatitis B surface antibody titer (positive required or follow-up testing)
- Varicella vaccination or titer
- Seasonal flu vaccination (no exemptions)
- Physical exam attesting ability to meet physical demands, updated annually
- Pass/Fail cardiac rhythm assessment during orientation (basic rhythm interpretation with minimum passing scores)
Additional Notes
- Fingerprinting may be required depending on unit assignment
- Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments required prior to start
- Professional appearance guidelines must be reviewed and acknowledged
