Registered Nurse (MS/Telemetry - Neuro & Stroke)

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Provide nursing care for adult patients with embolic and hemorrhagic strokes, seizures, neurosurgical cases (including shunt revisions, tumor removals, craniotomies/cranioplasties).
  • Stroke care follows American Heart Association guidelines for Comprehensive Stroke Center designation.
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients.
  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM).
  • Weekend work required every other weekend.
  • Floating to other units or campuses may be required, limited to areas where qualified and competent.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Required Clinical Skills

  • Starting IVs, accessing ports, managing PICC and central lines, peripheral IV care, blood product administration, PCA and heparin protocols.
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, tracheostomy management.
  • Telemetry monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, Rapid Response Team participation.
  • Care for cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, pre/post neurosurgery care.
  • Continuous bladder irrigation, isolation precautions, surgical drain management, feeding tube care.

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse license valid in South Carolina or a multistate compact license.
  • Pending licenses are not accepted.

Scheduling and Policies

  • Shift: Night (3x12 hours).
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
  • All scheduling requests must be submitted and approved at booking.
  • Locals accepted within radius rule criteria.

Compliance and Onboarding Requirements

  • Driver’s license/state ID required for computer access and must be carried on duty.
  • Background check: 7-year history within 12 months of start, including multiple state and county searches, sex offender, FACIS III, and international searches if applicable.
  • E-Verify or attestation required.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and every 30 days thereafter.
  • Physical exam within 1 year attesting ability to meet physical demands.
  • Drug screening within 1 year, updated annually (5-panel minimum).
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (if working in high-risk areas)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 90 days of start
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or 2 vaccines (second vaccine can be pending with timeline)
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption (not required for remote workers)
  • Respirator fit test completed onsite during orientation.
  • Badge photo required with specific guidelines (passport style, plain background, no obstructions).
  • Online orientation modules must be completed within 72 hours of assignment; no exceptions.
  • Pre-assignment testing (medication and arrhythmia tests) required within 72 hours of receiving login; two attempts allowed.

Additional Notes

  • Floating policy must be signed and renewed annually.
  • Medication and pharmacology competency exams required annually.
  • Core training (Parts I, II, III) including OSHA, patient safety, and ethical care must be current and updated annually.
  • Pass/fail testing for EKG and medication required for telemetry and related units.
  • Candidates must comply with all facility-specific policies and documentation requirements prior to start.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center with advanced specialty programs in cardiac care, stroke, and vascular services.
